Van Driver Dies After Colliding With Hospital Bus In Mercer Co: Police

Officials said the van crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a Capital Health shuttle bus.

EWING, NJ — A van driver died after veering into another lane of traffic and colliding with a Capital Health Systems shuttle bus early Monday morning in Ewing, officials said.

A Ewing police officer was en route to police headquarters that day when he saw the crash in the intersection of Scotch Road and Sam Weinroth Road around 6:37 a.m., police said. The officer immediately notified Ewing Dispatch that he was on scene.

An initial probe into the crash indicated that the van was northbound on Scotch Road when it crossed over the double yellow line for an unknown reason and collided with the bus, police said.

First responders pulled the van driver from his vehicle, and he went into cardiac arrest shortly thereafter. The Trenton resident was later pronounced dead at Capital Health - Regional Hospital. Police have not released his name as of Thursday morning, as they wait to notify his family members overseas.

Police said the shuttle bus driver was also taken to Capital Health - Hopewell after complaining of pain in his chest. On Thursday, Capital Health told Patch the driver was treated and released, and there were no passengers on the shuttle at the time of the accident.

The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office Serious Collision Response Team will assist in the investigation, police said.
