Leave The Crabs At The Jersey Shore, PETA Urges
Animal-rights group says hermit crab care is more complex than people realize.

As the last week of the Jersey Shore tourist summer winds down, people are looking for souvenirs to take home from their trip to the beach.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is urging people to not make hermit crabs one of those souvenirs, my9nj.com reports.
PETA spokesperson Laura Cascada says that hermit crabs are much more complex creatures than people think.

“These are much more complex animals with very complicated needs. They’re not starter pets that any kid can just automatically know what to do with,” she said.
PETA isn’t trying to deter people from buying the pet, the my9nj.com report concludes, but to instead do the necessary homework about them. If taken care of properly hermit crabs could live up to 30 years.
