Overall Crime Rates Drop in Little Silver, Oceanport

While overall crime in Little Silver and Oceanport declined in 2011 from 2010, according to data released with the state's 2011 Uniform Crime Report, incidents of violent crimes rose slightly in Little Silver.

The two boroughs followed trends throughout Monmouth County in nearly every reportable crime statistic, although the drop was not uniform statewide. . 

Three reports of aggravated assault in 2011 in Little Silver, up from zero in 2010, brought the borough's rate of violent crime per 1,000 to 0.5.

The 50 incidents of crime in Little Silver showed a decline from 79 in 2010, according to the Crime Report. Violent crimes rose from zero incidents in 2010 to 3 in 2011 and nonviolent crimes dropped from 79 to 47 incidents.

In Oceanport, the 76 incidents of crimes in 2011 declined from 88 in 2010. Violent crimes reported dropped from 7 incidents in 2010 to 6 in 2011 and nonviolent crimes dropped from 81 to 70 incidents in 2011.

The crime data, compiled and reported by the NJ State Police, tracked reports of murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft.

Robberies in Oceanport increased from 2 to 3 reported incidents in 2011 but there were no reported rapes the same year, a drop from one rape reported in 2010.

The overall crime rate per 1,000 residents in Little Silver dropped from 13.3 to 8.4 when comparing 2010 to 2011. The overall nonviolent crime rate per 1,000 in Little Silver dropped from 13.3 in 2010 to 7.9 in 2011.

In Oceanport, the crime rate per 1,000 residents dropped from 15.1 to 13. The violent crime rate fell from 1.2 to 1.0 and nonviolent crime rate dropped from 13.9 to 12 between 2010 and 2011.

Countywide, the crime rate per 1,000 residents dropped from 24.2 in 2010 to 23.7 in 2011, and the violent crime rate fell from 2.0 per 1,000 to 1.8 per 1,000. The nonviolent crime rate also saw a decline countywide.

Monmouth also recorded declines in every recorded violent crime category. The overall incidents of crime was 15,237 in 2010 as compared to 14,957 in 2011.

As required by statute, all law enforcement agencies in the state submit monthly and annual summary crime reports to the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, under the NJ State Police.
