Former Long Valley Cop Joins Morris County Prosecutor's Office

Michael J. Thompson has officially been hired as a new detective for the Morris County Prosecutor's Office.

LONG VALLEY, NJ — A former member of the Washington Township Police Department has recently been announced as a new hire at the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office.

Michael J. Thompson has officially been hired as a detective and has been assigned to the sex crimes/child endangerment unit within the tactical division, according to Morris County Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll, First Assistant Prosecutor Maggie Calderwood, and Chief of Detectives Robert McNally.

Thompson was officially sworn in at the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office on Feb. 27, 2023.

Prior to joining the Morris County Prosecutor's Office, Thompson worked for the Washington Township Police Department as a patrol officer, narcotics/patrol canine handler, and detective since 2008.

He also previously worked for SEARS as a general store manager and loss prevention manager, the prosecutor’s office said.

"We are pleased to have such a decorated officer joining our investigative staff of the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office. Detective Thompson’s demonstrated skill set and law enforcement commendations make him a welcome and highly qualified addition to our team," Carroll said.

Thompson holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Centenary University. He graduated from the Morris County Police Training Academy and has since taken numerous professional training courses to further his development.

Over the course of his career, Thompson has received numerous honors, including the Senate and General Assembly Award for Exceptional Duty, two Senate and General Assembly Unit Citations, and the Meritorious Team Award from the 200 Club of Morris County.
