5K Heroin Doses Seized In Bergen, Essex Counties, Officials Say

Police seized 107 bricks of heroin, equal to about 5,350 dosage units, that led to the criminal charges of two Newark women, officials said.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — More than 5,000 doses of heroin were seized in a raid in Bergen and Essex counties this week, prosecutors announced Thursday.

A Harrison Avenue home in Garfield was among three properties where police found 107 packages of heroin, 26 grams of cocaine and 1,042 of crack cocaine, acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens said.

Investigators also found a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson handgun in one of the houses, prosecutors said.

Two Newark woman, Lisa Hughes and Geraldine Shoulars, were arrested on possession and distribution charges, prosecutors said.

The raid came the same week the New Jersey division of the Drug Enforcement Administration released an extensive report on drug use in the state.

The report found that drug-related deaths in Bergen County — and across the state— have more than doubled over the past 10 years.
