Man ID'd In Fatal Rt. 287 Crash: Police

The crash occurred late Sunday night and shut down the southbound side of the highway for 8 hours.

MAHWAH, NJ — Authorities have identified the driver who died after he was hit by a tractor-trailer on Route 287 late Sunday night.

John J. Neumayer, 51, of Wantage, was traveling on Route 287 South when his 2015 Hyundai became disabled and he stopped on the highway, said State Police Trooper Charles Marchan.

Neumayer got out of his vehicle at about 11:20 p.m. and a tractor-trailer hit him and his vehicle, killing him, Marchan said. Neumayer was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neumayer was involved in an earlier motor vehicle accident, which disabled his vehicle, Marchan said. Police are investigating exactly when and where that accident occurred and in what lane of travel Neumayer was stopped on I-287 when he was struck.

No charges have been filed against the tractor-trailer driver.

The highway reopened at about 7:30 a.m., State Police said.
