Bergen Student Wins Statewide Anti-Drug Poster Contest

Ava Wittreich's chess-themed design will be on 40,000 folders distributed to students throughout New Jersey in September.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Playing with drugs is a no-win scenario. Just ask Ava Wittreich.

Wittreich, of Bergenfield, was one of two co-winners of The Partnership For A Drug-Free New Jersey's annual anti-drug Fourth Grade Folder Contest.

The theme of this year's contest was "Fun Things to Do Instead of Drugs." The winning entries will each get printed on 40,000 folders that will be distributed to fourth-grade students throughout New Jersey in September.

Wittreich's theme was "Don't play with drugs! You can't win!"

Angelo Valente, executive director of The Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey, called the contest "an effective" way to educate and engage students in making safe decisions about their future.

Of the 32 finalists for this year's contest, 10 attend Bergen County schools.

"Their creative artwork has delivered a strong message to themselves, fellow students, teachers, and parents about the importance of enjoying a healthy, drug-free life," Valente said.
