Crash Kills Superintendent In Bergen Co., Community Grieves
Englewood School Superintendent Ronel Cook died in a weekend car crash that occurred in New York, according to authorities.
ENGLEWOOD, NJ — Englewood Schools Superintendent Ronel Cook, who had promised to put kids first, died in a weekend car crash in New York, and although he was hired just a few months ago, the tragic loss left community members shocked and gutted.
"We are deeply saddened to announce that (Cook) was in an accident and has passed away," Acting Assistant Superintendent Jennifer Sifuentes said in a letter to the community. "During his short tenure with the district, (Cook) demonstrated a passion for education, students and our community."
Cook, 51, died after his vehicle veered off Cross County Parkway and hit a wall at the Seminary Avenue overpass in Yonkers, according to authorities. His son, riding as a passenger, sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Englewood police also offered condolences on Cook's loss, and said that his support of the department and city was appreciated.
"In the short time Cook was with our community, he made many meaningful connections, and he was a true leader, the department said.
