Fatal Shooting In Bergen County Leads To 3 Charged, Arrested: Prosecutor

A Saturday shooting in Hackensack that killed one man and wounded another led to the charges of three men, the prosecutor's office said.

HACKENSACK, NJ — Three were arrested in connection with a Saturday shooting in Hackensack that left one dead and another wounded, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.

Police responded to the shooting at around 5 p.m. and found two men shot — one succumbed to the injury, and the other sustained a non-life threatening injury. Vidal Nieves, 28, was identified as the deceased, and the other was not identified.

An investigation revealed that Dior Alston shot Nieves and that Malik Abel acted as an accomplice, while Rayshawn Powel-Myhand tried to hide evidence of the crime, the prosecutor's office said.

Alston, 21, of South Hackensack; and Malik Abel, 21, of Maywood, were charged with first-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, first-degree conspiracy to commit murder, second-degree possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun, and fourth-degree stalking.

Alston and Abel were remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending their first court appearances.

Powel-Myhand, 19, of Hackensack, was charged with third-degree hindering apprehension. He was also remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending his first court appearance.
