Gazebo Remodel, New Chess Tables Coming To Mahwah, Thanks To Scouts
Upgrades to the gazebo at the senior center, and custom concrete chess tables are coming to Mahwah as part of Boy Scout Eagle projects.
MAHWAH, NJ — A gazebo at Mahwah Senior Center will be renovated and concrete chess tables will be added to a park or natural area in the township, thanks to two local scouts working toward an Eagle rank.
John Wu and Anthony Cafiso, Mahwah Troop 50 scouts and Mahwah High School students, presented their project proposals to the township council last week, and were met with enthusiastic support from council members.
Wu, he said, will pressure wash, fill cracks in, sand and re-stain the 16-year-old gazebo; add cedar benches and install white LED tube lights inside; and, for a "finishing touch," will add decorative borders and edges outside. He added he would like to start and complete this project next year.

"When this is done, we will come by and celebrate with apple cider or something," Council President David May said.
May added that the council would issue a proclamation recognizing the scouts' achievements upon completion, and even hold ribbon-cutting events, if desired.

"Thank you for your time and this gift to the township," Councilwoman Kim Bolan said.
Also seeking approval for his Eagle project was scout Cafiso, who said he plans to build two chess tables made of high-performance concrete and place them in Continental Soldiers Park and / or Winter's Park, or elsewhere.
"Chess is a world-renowned game, and a lot of people know how to play it. So, (the location for this) will become a place to gather," Cafiso said, adding that the project will cost an estimated $744.26 based on his calculations.
Council Vice President George Ervin said Cafiso's presentation was one of the most thorough he has seen, while Councilwoman Bolan noted that Cafiso had remarkably thought everything down to the penny.
"I look forward to the completed project," Council President David May said. "Keep us posted on when it is done, and I wish you the best of luck."
