MAHWAH, NJ — The Township Council has cancelled a special meeting Thursday for a new cell tower after rejecting all bids received for the project at Fire Company 3.

The winning bidder submitted "an unacceptable location" for the tower that was "not compliant with the wetlands delineation" of the project. It was also not compliant with the bid's insurance requirements, Mayor John Roth said in an email to Council President David May and other officials.

"The township is rejecting all bids and will re-bid the project in a manner that will provide greater clarity as to permissible tower location and insurance requirements," Roth said.

Bid documents will be revised and submitted to the council for review at its July 25 meeting.

The rejection of bids is the latest chapter in a 14-year quest to remediate a 2-mile-wide reception dead zone in the northern part of the township.

Homeowners near the firehouse have pushed back on the plan despite cellphone service providers and a township consultant recommending that site as the best location for a tower at least four times, NorthJersey.com reported.
