Mahwah Historical Train Station To Receive Upgrades
All aboard! Mahwah's train station is in line to receive infrastructure improvements.

MAHWAH, NJ — Plans to revitalize Mahwah's historical train station are moving forward, according to public transportation officials.
An invitation for bid was released by New Jersey Transit for state-of-good-repair work — or work to rehabilitate facilities to operate at a safe and efficient level — to the station. Cost estimates are pending receipt of the bid, NJ Transit spokesperson Kyalo Mulumba said.
“Capital investment in this important station project will be a benefit for the local community and for our customers," NJ Department of Transportation Commissioner and NJ Transit Board Chair Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti said.

Phase One of the state-funded project will include new framing, gutters and downspouts; rafter repair and replacement; and roof sheathing and retaining wall replacement. Site work will also include relocation of the ticket vending machine, and electrical and lighting upgrades, a news release said.
Construction of this first phase is anticipated to begin this fall and complete in winter 2025. A future phase will continue facade and interior restoration, spokesperson Mulumba added.

“The improvements coming to our Mahwah Station will provide an enhanced travel experience for all those customers who depend on it every day,” NJ Transit president and CEO Kevin Corbett said.
The improvements, NJ Transit said, will preserve the station's historic aesthetic while enhancing a central piece of the Mahwah's downtown. Project work will not impact service to riders, Mulumba added.
Served by the Main Line, Bergen County Line and Port Jervis Line, the station — built in 1915 to replace a prior station that had burned down, NorthJersey.com reported — is an "important and vital part" of the town, Mayor Jim Wysocki said.
“We are relieved that NJ Transit has placed Mahwah in their five-year capital investment plan to restore the beauty and safety of Mahwah’s beloved train station," Mahwah Mayor Jim Wysocki said. We look forward to the restoration and getting the station back to its full, intended use for our residents and commuters.”
NJ Transit's five-year capital plan — adopted in 2020 — identifies the projects for "dramatically improving the speed, reliability, safety, reach and quality of service," the mass transportation system said on its website.
“Train stations throughout our system are often the first touchpoint in a customer’s journey," CEO Corbett said, "and we are committed to ensuring these vital transit hubs deliver the best possible experience for our customers and the communities they serve."
