Mahwah Mayor Laforet: 'MMA Ice Rink Closed Due to Township Council Safety Concerns'

Disagreeing with the council, Mayor Laforet's stated he believes the MMA took "reasonable and prudent safety measures to ensure ... safety."

Mahwah Mayor William Laforet sent a nixle alert to residents Thursday letting them know that the ice skating rink, which was funded by the Mahwah Municipal Alliance, will close immediately “until the Township Council can provide a list of their concerns and how they wanted it corrected.”

Saying he ”disagrees with the council,” Mayor Laforet’s message stated he believes the MMA took “reasonable and prudent safety measures to ensure the safety of all those who used the rink.”

“The Mahwah Municipal Alliance funded the recent installation of an ice rink that has been widely used by many of our children and residents,” the alert stated.

The news comes after Mahwah’s Township Council questioned the rink, stating it was never presented to the Council and that there is no supervision at the location, according to Wyckoff Suburban News.

“I want to ensure that these safety measures called for by Council are applied fairly to all our recreation areas and a proper evaluation is performed,” Mayor Laforet said in the nixle alert. “It is unfortunate but the MMA always take safety measures very seriously.”
