Mahwah Museum Gallery Talk: Old Station Museum and Caboose

Learn about an important part of Mahwah's history as the Old Station Museum Trustee Bob Adler gives a lecture August 17 about the station.

On Sunday, August 17 at 4:00 p.m., Museum Trustee Bob Adler will give a gallery talk about the history of the Old Station and 1929 Erie Caboose, and about the artifacts within them.

The Old Station, which was built in 1871, played an important role in the development of the community, serving as train station, freight station, telegraph office and post office. In fact, the Old Station is such an important part of the town’s history that the Mahwah Historical Society was created in 1965 to rescue the old 1871 Railroad Station from demolition. Through the efforts of many volunteers the station was moved to its current location, and has been preserved as a museum now displaying many railroad artifacts.

The 1929 Erie Caboose is an example of a “Center Cupola” caboose, which were popular in the northeast. This caboose actually ran on the railroad through town. The caboose served as living quarters and communication center; inside are many tools of the trade. It was rescued in 1969 and opened as part of the museum in 1970.
