Mahwah Museum Hosts 'Beauty in the Cemeteries' at Ramapo Reformed Church Ed. Building Feb. 5

The talk will include discussions about fashions in tombstones, different types of cemeteries and some of the interesting people buried.

On Thursday, Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m., Peggy Norris and Joe Suplicki will present the program “Beauty in the Cemetery” at the Ramapo Reformed Church Ed. Building, located at 100 Island Road in Mahwah.

Cemeteries are a rich source of remembrance and art. Monuments range from humble fieldstone markers to the most elaborate marble sculpture to modern eclecticism. In this lecture, Peggy Norris and Joe Suplicki will talk about cemeteries in Mahwah and the Bergen County area; the talk will include discussions about fashions in tombstones, different types of cemeteries, and some of the interesting people buried in them.

Joe Suplicki and Peggy Norris are the Village historians for Ridgewood and have researched and presented many programs together. Joe’s deep knowledge of the Bergen County newspapers enriches all of their presentations. Peggy is the Local History Librarian at the Ridgewood Public Library. They became interested in cemeteries about 7 years ago and have been studying and taking pictures in local cemeteries ever since.

The Mahwah Museum Lecture Series presents monthly history lectures and multimedia programs that are open to the public. Upcoming lectures include “New Jersey 350” by Hank Bitten, “100 Years: the Mahwah Fire Department” and “Mahwah’s Changing Railroad.”

The Mahwah Museum, located at 201 Franklin Turnpike, is open weekends and Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m. The Museum is currently featuring “The Neighborhoods of Mahwah” and “NJ 350” and permanent exhibits “Les Paul in Mahwah” and the Donald Cooper Model Railroad, which is open weekends from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission to the Museum is $5 for non-members, members and children are free.
