Mahwah Teen Hosting ‘Social Reading’ Book Fair

@Reading can be #fun using social media.

That’s the message a Mahwah High School senior is trying to get across to younger students in the district with her “Social Reading Book Fair,” which she is hosting Tuesday.

From 3 to 4 p.m. in the Ramapo Ridge Cafeteria, Julia Bauer will be hosting the fair as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project.

“The book fair will introduce attendees to the fact that their favorite books and stories do not have to be over when they have finished reading them,” she said. “Online communities surrounding different books fostered by social media are very rewarding to take part in and can make reading even more fun and provoke discussion.”

And, she’s speaking from experience. Bauer said she’s been a part of online reading communities since she was in the fourth grade.

“It’s definitely gotten me to read more, but it also exposes you to different perspectives and ideas on what you’re reading,” she explained.

At Tuesday’s event, which she has been organizing since last spring, Bauer plans to introduce attendees to seven example online social reading communities while they enjoy food, art, music, and a book donation collection.

The event is free and open to the public.
