Mahwah Township Attorney to Draft Policy Regulating Nixle, Public Communications

The Township Council felt Mayor Laforet saying he disagreed with their safety concerns over the ice rink was a "political jab."

After Mahwah Mayor William Laforet sent a Nixle alert on Jan. 29 to inform residents the ice skating rink was closing and that he ”disagreed” with the Township Council’s safety concerns, the council has asked its attorney to draft a new policy that will regulate all public communications made by officials and Township employees.

Township attorney Brian Chewcaskie said the policy ”would formally prohibit” offensive language, advertising and political comments on all forms of Township communications, according to NorthJersey.com, who also reported the council took the Mayor’s message as a “political jab.”

“I don’t mind that the mayor uses it,” Councilman Jonathan Wong said. “It’s the political messaging that I’d like to point out.”

The council will have to adopt the policy as an ordinance.
