Mahwah Welcomes New Fire Truck to Stag Hill Fleet

For the first time since 2009, the Mahwah Fire Department welcomed a new truck to its fleet over the weekend.

According to Mahwah Fire Chief Ed Garza, the new 1,500-gallon pumper is replacing a truck from 1991 that the FD had to take out of commission last year due to mechanical problems.

“We are mounting all of our equipment on it, and we’ll have a training on how to use the new truck this weekend,” before it hits the road in the township, Garza said.

The new truck, No. 515, was approved as a capital expense by the township council during budget hearings earlier this year. The town bonded for the new truck, which cost about $457,000.

The new pumper will be added to Company 5’s fleet, which responds primarily to fire calls on Stag Hill.

Garza said the FD has been working to acquire the new pumper for about 10 months. The process included specifying some features on this vehicle that will allow it to travel up and down Stag Hill, have all wheel drive, and be able to maneuver in and out of long, tight driveways.

Though Garza said there are no plans for an official community "Wet Down" event to welcome the new truck, the FD might host a double party when Company 2 buys a new ruck next year, which it is currently in the planning stages of proposing.
