Man Charged With Carrying Illegal Guns, Hollow-Point Bullets

Police say the trucker was on his way to a local repair shop when cops pulled him over and found the guns.

A Minnesota man was arrested Tuesday morning when police allegedly found two illegal guns and hollow nose bullets in the cab of his tractor-trailer, police said Wednesday.

According to Mahwah Police Chief Jim Batelli, Evan Walsh, 32, of Kasson, Minnesota, was hauling goods in a tractor-trailer when he started experiencing some trouble with his truck. He was heading to a truck repair shop in Mahwah when Police Officer David Vega pulled him over on Route 287 for equipment violations, Batelli said.

According to Batelli, cops interviewed Walsh and found out that he’d been arrested on prior weapons charges.

During a search of the vehicle, Vega found two handguns – a Glock 32 and Glock 33, police said. Though neither gun had been reported stolen, Batelli said Walsh was not legally permitted to carry them in the state of New Jersey.

Both guns were loaded with hollow nose bullets, illegal bullets with a hollowed-out tip meant to expand upon hitting a target, Batelli said.

Walsh was arrested and charged with two counts of possession of a handgun and one count of possession of hollow nose bullets, police said. He was released on his own recognizance, and has a first court appearance in Mahwah June 4.

“The motor vehicle stop and subsequent arrest underscore the availability of handguns and hollow nose bullets that are possessed illegally,” Batelli said of the arrest. “In this incident the driver was en route to a local business in the township with these weapons in the cab of the trailer when he was stopped.”
