Sign Restriction Ordinance Introduced By Mahwah Council

A proposed ordinance to prohibit all temporary, non-commercial signs in a public right-of-way in Mahwah will be up for discussion.

MAHWAH, NJ — A proposed ordinance to prohibit all temporary, non-commercial signs in a public right-of-way in Mahwah will be up for discussion at an upcoming township council meeting.

"I think this will be a robust conversation," said Council President David May, who voted to introduce the ordinance.

Council members Janet Ariemma and Jonathan Wong voted against introducing the ordinance.

"I am so against this," Ariemma said. "It discriminates against newcomers. You can't even put up a sign if you want to have a Mahwah run."

Currently, under the township code, temporary, non-commercial signs are allowed within a right-of-way if a permit is obtained from the town. But this ordinance would disallow all such signs, township officials said.

"I will welcome a discussion on the topic," council member Kim Bolan said.

A public discussion is scheduled to take place on Dec. 21.
