Are Menopause Testing Kits Effective?

Menopause testing kits can conveniently be bought over the counter, but how well do they really work? An expert weighs in.

Over-the-counter testing kits for pregnancy, ovulation, and COVID-19 provide reliable results, but the effectiveness of at-home menopause detection kits is less clear. Meghan Rattigan, D.O., FACOG, an OB/GYN at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, notes that these kits cannot definitively confirm menopause.

“Although they are 99.9% accurate in detecting the FSH hormone, FSH alone is not a conclusive marker of menopause,” says Dr. Rattigan. “This hormone has multiple functions and its levels vary throughout a woman’s cycle, often rising just before ovulation.”
