When Elizabeth Pelletier’s 96-year-old mother, Mary, was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma on her nose, they sought a convenient, safe, and effective treatment. Initially, Elizabeth scheduled Mohs surgery for January 2024, but the surgeon hesitated due to the cancer's location, expected results, and Mary’s age. Mohs surgery is an effective skin cancer treatment, but isn't suitable for all patients, especially those with health concerns, prior procedures, or risks of scarring in sensitive areas like the nose.

Elizabeth, 71, from Avon-by-the-Sea, NJ, asked about alternatives, and the surgeon recommended brachytherapy—a precise, noninvasive radiation therapy for treating skin cancers like basal and squamous cell carcinomas in challenging areas. In such cases, brachytherapy is a preferred alternative, offering a noninvasive treatment with minimal side effects and little to no scarring.

After discovering the benefits of brachytherapy, Elizabeth—who had previously undergone several Mohs procedures for skin cancer—received the biopsy results for a lesion on her nose. She was facing a skin cancer diagnosis herself and would also need treatment.
