Belmar Marina Fire Still Under Investigation

Twelve dry-docked boats were destroyed in blaze, mayor says

Belmar, NJ - The cause of a massive blaze at the Seaport Inlet Marina that destroyed a dozen boats on Tuesday is still under investigation.

But News 12is reporting that the multiple code violations will be issued. And residents in the surrounding neighborhood are worried about safety concerns over the number of boats that are dry-docked there.

Dozens of residents had to be evacuated during the fire for safety reasons, but no one was injured, Mayor Matt Doherty said.

News 12 New Jerseysaw more than a dozen drums around the marina which sources say contain gasoline. At least one of the drums was labeled “bad gas.”

"I have had concerns in the past about some of the things that I've seen and I do worry about the safety,” says neighbor Molly Spanarkel.

The marina's boat garage was damaged in the fire. An attorney says the garage was only a temporary structure.

News 12has been told that multiple code violations will be issued to the marina.

Other residents say that they worry about the number of boats on the property. Some of the boats sit about 30 feet in the air.

"I would feel better if I knew that everything was up to code there. That there were inspections,” Spanarkel says.
