On St. Patrick’s Day of 2023, the day started off like any other bustling day for 73-year-old Doug O’Connell from Manasquan, New Jersey, a retired coach and educator. After his usual acupuncture session, he found himself back home, preparing to take his loyal companion, Ned the white lab, for a run along the beach.

Doug’s wife Cindy teaches meditation, but fortunately, she was home that day. She walked into the kitchen and saw Doug on the floor, unable to rise, his right arm immobile, and beads of sweat forming. Without hesitation, she dialed 911, and help arrived swiftly.

By the time Cindy reached the hospital, Doug had already undergone assessment, diagnosed with an ischemic stroke. With the window of opportunity still open, medical staff administered tPA, a clot-dissolving medication.

Yet, a subsequent CT scan unveiled the severity of Doug's condition—a colossal, dense clot obstructing vital arteries in his brain. The initial treatment proved insufficient; Doug required a more aggressive approach.
