Women typically go through perimenopause and menopause in their 40s and 50s. Hormonal fluctuations during this period can lead to irregular menstrual cycles, insomnia, and mood swings.

Perimenopause involves a gradual decrease in hormone levels as the body transitions toward menopause, which is marked by the absence of menstrual periods for 12 consecutive months. On average, women reach menopause at age 51 after several years of perimenopause. Some women experience new symptoms during this time, while others simply stop having periods.

Some of the symptoms of menopause include hot flashes, night sweats and mood changes. Megan Rattigan, D.O., goes into detail about what women can expect during this new stage of life.
