UPDATE: Lights are in at Memorial Park

The lights are up; total cost is lower than township originally anticipated.

Maplewood has rented six temporary lights for the south field at Memorial Park to illuminate practices and games for local soccer and other sports teams. The lights were installed earlier this week, after being approved by the Maplewood Township Committee at its last meeting.

Space for local teams is tight this season because DeHart Field is unusable until at least the end of the year.

The lights, which are from Sunbelt Rentals, will cost a total of $3,655 per month, according to Township Administrator Joseph Manning. The township will rent them for roughly two and a half months. The cost includes diesel fuel and a protection plan.

Manning had originally estimated the lights would cost between $18,000 and $26,000 based on initial bids that came in, but the township was able to rent them from Sunbelt for less.
