Hole Collapses On Boy Digging in Sand in Long Branch, Responding Fire Truck Strikes Pedestrians

A large hole collapsed on a young boy who was digging in the sand in Long Branch on Tuesday afternoon, and a fire truck responding to the scene hit a pedestrian who was holding his toddler.

All three victims have been taken to area hospitals for their injuries, according to Long Branch Police Capt. Jason Roebuck.

Roebuck said the 12-year-old boy was digging in the sand and that CPR was performed on him by lifeguards as soon as he was pulled out of the hole. He said the boy was rushed to Monmouth Medical Center for treatment and that police are still investigating the incident.

The boy is still in the the pediatric intensive care unit at the hospital as of 9:30 p.m., according to Roebuck.

The man holding his toddler was struck near the corner of Madison Avenue and Ocean Boulevard just as a fire truck was turning the corner to respond to the scene of the incident on the beach.

Roebuck said the man dropped the toddler just as the fire truck hit him. He said both the toddler's and the man's injuries appear to be non life-threatening, and that they were taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune. No update on their condition was immediately available.

Both incidents occurred shortly after 3:30 p.m.
