Aberdeen to Re-examine Redevelopment Area Near Train Station

The Aberdeen Township Council unanimously authorized the planning board to conduct a new study of the approximately 60 acres of township property surrounding the Aberdeen-Matawan Train Station at their meeting Tuesday night.

The land was studied in 1999 but according to Township Council Attorney Daniel McCarthy, the council decided to re-examine the property to see what changes have occurred to the land over the past eleven years and ensure that it complies with state laws.

"We just want to make sure the original study still comports with the existing law, because as you can imagine a lot of things have changed since 1999," McCarthy explained.

According to McCarthy, the original study done in 1999 examined the entire redevelopment area, including land in Matawan. The new study will only examine land in Aberdeen.

"There's no requirement," McCarthy said. "We asked the planning board to have a planner look at the original study to see if anything has to be done."

The study will be conducted by Coppola & Coppola Associates, the same company who completed the original study.
