Alexander Michnewich, 88, of Aberdeen Dies

Alexander (Al) Michnewich, 88, passed away Friday, February 17, 2012. Born in Brooklyn, NY on February 21st, 1923, he graduated from Boys High in Brooklyn. Upon graduation, Al entered NYU, but as a student, he was drafted into the army during WWII. He served his country as a Tech 5 with the 1905th Aviation Engineers who were instrumental in the building of the Stillwell/Ledo Road through China, Burma and India. After his enlistment was up, Al played semi-pro baseball, but had to make the decision to give up the dream and get a real job. As a result, Al met, fell in love and married Susan Mancuso. Al went to work first for Western Electric, and then continued a forty year career with Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, and than Holmdel. As plant engineer/draftsman, Al played an integral part in the construction of the Bell Labs Holmdel facility (now Lucent), as well as the AT&T Middletown location. He was a wonderful sketch artist and an avid reader of all things science, as well as anything WWII related. Al loved traveling the country with his family for army reunions and spending time with his children, grandchildren and extended family.

He was predeceased by his parents, Sophie and Mark Michnewich. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Susan, as well as his two children: a son, Alexander Michnewich, and his wife Susan of Silver Spring, MD., and his daughter, Christine and her husband Bill Tipton of Beachwood; two grandsons, Ensign Daniel Michnewich who is stationed on the guided missile destroy USS William P Lawrence, and Matthew Michnewich, currently studying engineering at Rensselaer. He also leaves behind his four-legged loves, Patches, Snowball, Chocolate.

Al was a man who never had a bad thing to say about anyone, and would always be there to lend a hand without asking for anything in return. He was a giving soul who relished life. Al will be sadly missed, but never forgotten. Visitation will be held on Sunday February 19, 2012 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm at the Waitt Funeral Home and Cremation Service. A funeral mass will be held on Monday February 20, 2012 at 9:15am at St. Catharine Church, Holmdel, followed by entombment in St. Gabriel Cemetery, Marlboro.
