Anne Hathaway In NJ This Week Filming Movie

Local police officers spotted Hathaway filming outside a South Amboy bar Thursday, wearing a blonde wig for the 1960s mystery thriller.

SOUTH AMBOY, NJ — Anne Hathaway is in South Amboy this Thursday and Friday, where she is filming her latest movie, "Eileen," confirmed South Amboy business administrator Glenn Skarzynski.

Skarzynski said the film crew is filming out of the South Amboy bar Lagoda's. He said local police officers and town residents spotted Hathaway Thursday filming outside the bar, wearing a blonde wig for this movie, described as a 1960s mystery thriller.

"The movie is set in 1960 and I can tell you from having been in Lagoda's many times myself that Lagoda's is frozen in the 1960s," said Skarzynski. "So I really don't think it was too far of a stretch for the film crew."

In an added twist, Rumson resident Siobhan Fallon Hogan is also in the movie. Hogan has appeared in "Forrest Gump" and "Men in Black," and she also filmed her movie "Rushed" in Rumson, Middletown and Red Bank.

"Eileen" stars Hathaway ("Les Misérables," "The Devil Wears Prada'") and Thomasin McKenzie ("JoJo Rabbit," "Last Night in SoHo"), directed by William Oldroyd ("Lady Macbeth") and is based on the book written by Ottessa Moshfegh.

The movie is set in 1960s Boston. Lagoda's Saloon announced on its Facebook page it will be closed Jan. 3 to 8.

"Lagoda's is a classic old-town longshoreman bar," production manager Jamin O’Brien told the Asbury Park Press. "The film takes place in a seaside town so it really, really works."

Filming for the movie has also taken place in Paramus, Jersey City, Metuchen, Sandy Hook and Cranford, the newspaper reported, and it will be filming in Westfield in the end of January.

Hathaway herself is a New Jersey native, having grown up in Short Hills.

The city of South Amboy put out an alert on its Facebook page this week, telling residents:

"As many of you might already know there will be a film crew in the City on the 6th and 7th working on an independent film production. They will be filming a scene on the interior of Lagoda's bar generally between the hours of 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. Portions of Broadway will be subject to periodic closures and there will be considerably more vehicles for those two days. South Amboy PD will be on hand to deal with traffic and provide security during the event."
