Eleven Years Later, Matawan Continues Promise Never to Forget

The borough marked the eleventh anniversary of Sept. 11

As the sun set on the eleventh anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, the Matawan Borough Fire Department renewed their promise to never forget with a ceremony at Memorial Park in Matawan.

"On this day eleven years ago, they came to help. Police officers, emergency service personnel, military personnel and private citizens, and yes, firefighters, especially the 343 who lost their lives that day by doing what they were trained to do: help," said Fire Chaplain Joe Lopes.

A member of the fire department rang the firefighter memorial bell three, four, and then three times in honor of the 343 firefighters lost on Sept. 11. Midway's was also constructed at the park to commemorate all of the people lost that day.
