Kathy's Angels Collect Cans for Neighborhood Children in Need

Three Cliffwood teens are setting out to make a difference in their community

Can by can, three Cliffwood teens are working together to raise money for neighborhood children to attend summer camp, pay for tutoring, or receive holiday gifts.

Sisters Aiyanah, 15, and Briyanah Richardson, 12, and their cousin, Aliem Shaw, 13, are collecting aluminum cans, crushing them, and exchanging them at a recycling center in Raritan for cash.

"My mother came up with the idea and we decided to go through with the plan of crushing them and selling them for the less fortunate," Aiyanah said.

The trio are operating their charitable efforts under the name "Kathy's Angels," in honor of the girls' great aunt and Aliem's grandmother Kathy, who lived next door to them before passing away a few years ago, the girls' mother Ericka explained.

"She was a staple in our family and she instilled in me and the kids to do good and give back to your community," Ericka said. "I think this is just amazing for them to do, to give to other people and not be selfish. Just give to others and that will help you in life. I really believe that."

With only about two official months under their belt, Kathy's Angels is ready to begin collections, explained Briyanah. Now, all they need are local residents who want to donate their cans to the cause.

"It's going to require a lot of effort. It's not like a bag of cans is $100. A garbage bag full is maybe about $20," said Ericka.

The road ahead may be long, but the three volunteers believe their efforts will be worth it in the end, noted Aliem, recalling how rewarding it felt one year when they helped hand out holiday gifts to underprivileged children.

"I like to see people smile and to make them happy," added Aiyanah.

As an added act of charity, the teens are also saving the tabs from the collected cans so they can donate those as well.
