MATAWAN, NJ — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Tiffany Stevenson, who nominated Ashley Stevenson of Matawan.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

Ashley is an extremely motivated young woman. She works very hard and has received straight As. She is also a member of the peer buddies, where she works with students with special needs. Outside of school she is a huge advocate for turtles and participates in “No Straw November” each year.

She is a member of Jersey Shore Girl Scout Troop 1718, which in the past year has collected items for The Husky House, a local animal shelter located here in Matawan. While her scouting and service projects keep her busy, we can’t forget to mention her athleticism. She is a goalie for the Hazlet United U12 girls travel soccer team and plays second base and outfield for the Monroe Thunder U12 girls softball team. Ashley is an all-around wonderful young woman who hopes to one day become a lawyer and open an owl sanctuary.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

Her ability to show empathy and care about others.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Ashley Stevenson!
