MATAWAN, NJ — Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Leslie-ann Lukoma who nominated Ssanyu, in the 12th grade, of Matawan-Aberdeen.

Ssanyu is an entrepreneur, author, public speaker and scholar who has worked to serve her community by promoting diverse literature. Most importantly, she is of sound character, is humble and truly cares about those around her She is homeschooled, but plays on the Matawan High School girl' basketball team and brings her leadership skills to the forefront as team captain.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about her?

Ssanyu wants to change the world and she serves to do it. She started her nonprofit organization at age 13 and has worked so hard doing events to promote her cause of promoting diverse literature.
