Matawan to Create Inventory of Historic Buildings
Mayor Buccellato says this is the first step toward preserving borough's history

A walk through Matawan highlights the historic nature of the over 325-year-old borough. Granite carriage steps still grace the sidewalks, homes from , 1800s and 1900s still linger and the still greets vistors.
The Matawan Borough Council took a small step toward preserving these historic buildings at their meeting Tuesday night. The council approved a resolution directing the Historic Sites Commission, a volunteer committee, to catalog and inventory of buildings in the borough that are over 100-years-old.
The purpose of creating the inventory is to give the borough an understanding of what buildings still stand today and why they are important, according to Mayor Paul Buccellato

"I think it's time the borough has an accurate listing of all of the structures in this municipality that are over 100 years old. We have a 325-year-history and we need to understand how rich it is," Buccellato said after the meeting.
Buccellato explained that the inventory would be a way to appreciate and acknowledge the history of both commercial and residentials buildings, and is the first step toward preservation.
