Matawan Woman's Painting On Display In Barcelona Art Museum

A woman who paints out of her Matawan home was recently awarded the Distinguished Achievement Award from the American Women Artists.

MATAWAN, NJ — A Matawan woman was recently awarded the Distinguished Achievement Award for figurative/portraiture from the American Women Artists.

Nanette Fluhr is the Matawan resident, and she won the award for her oil painting, "Manu," which she is pictured with above.

Her painting is currently on view at the European Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona, Spain, and will also be show in U.S. galleries.

Fluhr is a painter who currently lives in Matawan. She grew up in Marlboro Township and graduated from Rutgers. She paints out of her studio at her home in Matawan.

151 paintings and sculptures were entered in the contest, and more than $34,000 in cash and merchandise prizes were awarded to the 21 artists who won.

Jurist Emily Larsen, head of exhibitions and programs at the Springville Museum of Art, had this to say about Fluhr's piece:

“The artistry of this painting is amazing. The artist’s ability to show the delicate nuances such as the sheer on the satin and skin. It’s just incredible.”

Fluhr has created portraits that hang in public and private collections worldwide, and has received honors and awards from institutions such as The Art Renewal Center, The Artist’s Magazine, The Portrait Society of America, and the School of Visual Arts. Her work has been featured across the United States and Europe, as well as in a six-museum exhibit on contemporary American realism in China.
