Spook House May be Back at Keansburg Amusement Park This Summer

The amusement park will also hold its free Easter egg hunt this Sunday, March 20, on the beach.

Keansburg, NJ - A Monmouth County amusement park ride with a cult following may be back in summer 2016.

Keansburg Amusement Park, which opens Saturday for the season, told Patch it is trying very hard to open up The Spook House, a beloved ride that was destroyed when Superstorm Sandy hit in 2012.

"For the past three years we've had people calling, asking, 'Is the Spook House open yet?,'" Katie Johnson, marketing director at Keansburg Amusement Park & Runaway Rapids, told Patch. "Our hope is to have it open again by the end of the summer. We're really trying to get it back."

All of Keansburg Amusement Park was severely damaged, "almost destroyed" by Sandy, Johnson said, but the park underwent the herculean task of rebuilding and re-opened six months later. Many of the rides were operational again — except for The Spook House.

The historic ride has been in the park since the 1930s, and involves a trip into a dark, spooky building.

Easter Egg Hunt Sunday March 20

However, what will definitely happen will be the annual Easter Egg Hunt at Keansburg Amusement Park, which will be held this Sunday, March 20. The hunt is free and open to kids up to age 12. Eggs are hidden all along the beach by the amusement park, and there will be three sets of hunts, for different age groups.

The park had about 500 people for it last year, and expects the same this year. The egg hunts begin at 1 p.m.; crowds line up at 12:30, Johnson said. Whoever finds a golden egg in each age group wins a free bike.

The park will be open Saturday and Sunday for rides and is offering a buy-one, get-one-free ticket deal to celebrate their first weekend of business.
