Traditional Karate Center to Hold Women's Empowerment & Self Defense Class

The event will offer information and teach self defense techniques to women of all ages

of Matawan will host a women's empowerment and self defense workshop and luncheon on Wednesday, Aug. 22 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Shihan Michael Buttermark, of TKC, explained that he has been asked to teach womens' self defense workshops over the years. After participating in an event that celebrated female strength, educated attendees about domestic violence, and raised money for a local victim, he decided to put one together.

"I thought, you know what, it's time for me to do something," Buttermark said.

The food will be served at the workshop, courtesy of at the TKC dojo located at 347G Matawan Road, in the same shopping center as Pizza Hut. There will be an information session followed by 75 minutes of practical instruction, Buttermark said.

"I think right now is a good time for parents that have a daughter that's going off to college, or a middle school child that is going to high school, to learn self defense," he said.
