Local Woman Charged With Hit And Run That Killed Aberdeen Mom

The prosecutor says Sonia Gomez, 64, of Matawan was driving a 2015 Honda Pilot when she hit the woman on Sept. 4, and then fled the scene:

ABERDEEN, NJ — A Matawan woman has now been arrested and charged with hitting an Aberdeen woman with her car last month, and then fleeing the scene.

The woman who was hit, Aberdeen resident Judith Fox-Hernandez, 58, died from her injuries 25 days later in the hospital.

The accused is Sonia Gomez, 64. She was charged with one count of second-degree Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Crash. Police say she was driving a 2015 Honda Pilot when she hit Fox-Hernandez at 7:24 p.m. Sept. 4, a Wednesday, at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and 2nd Street in Aberdeen.

Fox-Hernandez was walking and crossing the intersection when Gomez hit her, said the prosecutor. Gomez then fled, he said.

"Gomez did not stop at the time of the crash at the scene, nor did she report the collision to law enforcement," said Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond Santiago. He announced her arrest Friday morning, Oct. 18.

Aberdeen Police responded to a 911 call of a pedestrian struck and upon arrival, found Fox-Hernandez lying in the road.

She was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where succumbed to her injuries 25 days later, on September 29. Fox-Hernandez was a wife and a mother to two children, according to her obituary. She had worked as a flight attendant.

Fox-Hernandez's death was investigated by the Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team (SCART), the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office – Major Crimes Bureau and the Aberdeen Police Department.

Gomez is represented by Harold C. Baker, Esq., of Fair Haven. As of Friday morning, she was still detained in jail.
