Breakthrough COVID-19 Cases Tick Up In New Jersey, Data Shows

Nationwide, more than 2,000 fully vaccinated COVID-19 patients have still been hospitalized or have died. Here are New Jersey's numbers.

NEW JERSEY — The New Jersey Department of Public Health reported Wednesday that 14,813 breakthrough cases of COVID-19 in the state have been identified.

A breakthrough case is one contracted by someone who has completed their vaccine series.

Of the more than 5 million people in New Jersey who have completed their vaccine series, less than .28 percent have contracted the virus.

Eighty coronavirus-related deaths have occurred among the 14,813 fully vaccinated persons confirmed with COVID-19, representing .0002 percent. 356 COVID-related hospitalizations have happened in that time frame, representing .007 percent.

Nationwide, as of Aug. 23, 2,063 fully vaccinated people have died as a result of the virus, and 87 percent of them have been age 65 or older, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

New Jersey's numbers on breakthrough cases was current as of Aug. 22.

When discussing the numbers on Monday, Governor Phil Murphy noted as he has many times in the last few months that New Jersey has a pandemic only among the unvaccinated.
