Borough officials announced a public meeting on plans to replace the Ironia Road bridge over the North Branch of the Raritan River.

MENDHAM, NJ — Plans to replace a well traveled bridge in Mendham Borough are moving forward, with a public meeting set to share details with residents.

The meeting, announced by borough officials this week, will take place on May 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Mendham Township Town Hall, 2 West Main Street in Brookside, and will follow an open house format.

The purpose of the public information meeting is to provide residents with an update on the status of the Ironia Road bridge replacement project over the North Branch of the Raritan River, as well as potential impacts, the borough said.

Attendees are encouraged to drop in, review displays, ask questions, and share feedback. Representatives from Morris County, Mendham Borough, Mendham Township, and project support staff will be on hand throughout the event to answer questions.

According to project plans, the bridge—originally built in 1952—is in poor condition, with significant structural issues including random cracking, heavy efflorescence, and rust stains throughout the abutments.

The plan calls for replacing the bridge with a new single-span structure made of galvanized steel girders and a concrete deck, supported by concrete abutments and wingwalls.

If all goes as planned, construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2026, with the project estimated to take approximately six months, officials said.

As a result, detours will be implemented, including a car detour along Mountainside Road, Mountain Avenue, and West Main Street, covering approximately 2.8 miles, and a truck detour via Burnett Road, Old Mill Road, and Mendham Road, spanning about 3.9 miles.

Other changes will affect certain utilities, including:

  • Overhead: Comcast, Verizon, and JCP&L lines – to remain in place
  • Water: New Jersey American Water 8” water main – to remain in place
  • Gas: PSE&G 4” steel gas main – to be relocated
