'A Job For Everyone:' Mendham, Chester Fire Depts Seek Volunteers

CHESTER, NJ — More than 70 percent of all fire departments in the country, including those in the area, are made up of volunteers.

They head out every day of the year, in all types of conditions, to fight fires and help with medical emergencies.

With that in mind, both Chester Volunteer Fire Company and Mendham Fire Department, recently posted separately about the importance of stepping up to become a volunteer first responder.

“Did you ever stop to think what would happen if no one volunteered to put out fires or respond to medical emergencies in your community?” each department asked.

They each described the “toll on on lives and property” as something that would be “unfathomable," without volunteer aid.

“Volunteer firefighters are this nation's first line of defense, and sometimes, your community's only line of defense in many types of emergencies,” they wrote.

“Fires don't wait,” each department added. “Neither should you.”

Each group of volunteer first responder organizations has a role for everyone, they both added.

Chester First Aid Squad also joined in with their own social media post about volunteerism, which suggests that some “spend their whole life wondering, ‘Did I make a difference?’”

“Some people don’t need to wonder,” their image expresses, with the First Aid Squad recommending followers, “Join our team…and make a difference.”
