Mendham Professor Running For Congress In NJ-11

MENDHAM, NJ — Mendham history professor Mark Washburne has announced his candidacy for congress, in New Jersey's 11th Congressional District. Washburne is a Democrat.

This is the second congressional election in a row Washburne has run for the nomination in the northern New Jersey district. He made his announcement on Facebook on Constitution Day, and said he believed President Donald Trump should be impeached.

"As I believe strongly that if we are going to "keep" this "Republic" Congress must fulfill its Constitutional duties concerning a rogue Executive, I am announcing on this Constitution Day that I am once again a Democratic candidate to represent New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District in the House of Representatives in the 2020 election," Washburne wrote, inviting those who "you agree that Trump should be impeached for his criminal behavior" to visit his website.

Washburne has worked as a history and political science professor for the past 25 years. He also serves as the of the President of the U.S. Running Streak Association, having run every day continuously since 1989. He ran for both Congress and mayor in Mendham Borough last year.

Washburne is the first Democrat to announce their candidacy against freshman Congresswoman Mikie Sherill, who was elected in 2018. In the 2018 Democratic primary, in which both ran, Washburne received 1,474 votes (about 3.5 percent), compared to Sherrill's 31.827 votes (about 76 percent).
