NJ's Oldest Restaurant Closing Soon For Renovations And Updates

The renovated stagecoach house has been serving meals for more than 280 years.

MENDHAM, NJ — The Garden State's oldest restaurant, which dates back to before the Revolutionary War, will close temporarily for a revamp of its kitchen, interior, and outside space.

Black Horse Tavern & Pub is located at 1 W. Main Street in Mendham and dates back to 1742, making it New Jersey's longest continually-running restaurant. The iconic eatery is preparing for renovations, and will close on March 4 with reopening planned in the fall.

"Get ready for a brand-new kitchen and a fresh look," the restaurant said in a social media post. "We're excited to unveil these upgrades to you."

Along with a refreshed interior design that will highlight the town's history, NJBiz.com reported that Black Horse will also debut a new menu when it returns in the fall.

The Black Horse was originally the farmhouse home of Ebenezer Byram, one of Mendham's founding fathers. It opened as a tavern to travelers in 1742, with the current pub area serving as a stable for horses.

The current menu features a number of comforting pub favorites and dishes with a modern twist, as well as a sizable wine, beer, and cocktail list. The Black Horse is currently owned by 40North Restaurants.
