MENDHAM, NJ — The $130,000 goal has almost been reached for Brookside Community Church’s “Raise the Roof” campaign to make emergency repairs, with funds still needed for the church’s historic complex.

The funds that have been raised for the Raise the Roof campaign so far have assisted the church with replacing the sanctuary's slate roof, which had been deteriorating, along with sheetrock, insulation and the church ceiling, which additionally needed to be fixed.

As the roof was being repaired while serving the community through its ministries, which have been complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the church explained in a news release that they found an additional $40,000 that needed to be made in “unexpected emergency repairs” to the McKinnell Center, which is an historic building itself.

The church has been appreciative of the fundraising so far, which Catherine Pierson, trustee president who spearheaded the project, said that it has helped to maintain the church’s historic attributes, with “replacing the roof with slate and repairing the copper gutters and accent pieces,” rather than alternate and non-historic materials.

“For more than 70 years the church has served as an anchor in the Brookside Historic District of colonial-era homes,” Pierson said.

Pastor Nicolette Siragusa said she hopes that residents who haven’t given yet will feel moved to do so, which will be “investing in the future of our community church,” she said.

We know these are difficult times and are thankful for gifts of any amount,” said Siragusa. “Many generous people have already contributed to preserving the church building that has come to represent the heart of faith in the heart of Brookside.”
