Payne was a college student at the County College of Morris at the time of his death, and was expecting his first child.

"He was an amazing friend, passionate worker and talented artist. He made a difference in the lives of so many. He was expecting his first child later this year and leaves so many with an empty space in his heart," friend Kelsey Lovenberg wrote on a GoFundMe.

Coworkers also shared loving memories of Payne, with one writing, "Jahahd was one of my favorite coworkers. He had an infectious smile, and a great attitude. He was so proud that he was about to be a father. May he live on through his baby girl!"
