NJ's Oldest Restaurant Set To Reopen This Month
The renovated stagecoach house, which has been closed for the past year for renovations, has been serving meals for over 280 years.

MENDHAM, NJ — Renovations at New Jersey's oldest restaurant, dating back to before the Revolutionary War, are nearly complete.
The Black Horse Tavern & Pub, located at 1 W. Main Street in Mendham, has been serving guests since 1742, making it New Jersey’s longest continually-running restaurant. The pub closed in March 2024 for a much-needed revamp of its kitchen, interior, and outdoor space.
Despite setbacks, including a fire that damaged parts of the building in early September, renovation plans have remained on track. The eatery is now planning a grand re-opening for Jan. 13.

The Black Horse Tavern & Pub was originally the farmhouse home of Ebenezer Byram, one of Mendham’s founding fathers. It opened as a tavern for travelers in 1742, with the current pub area once serving as a stable for horses.
The revamped menu, crafted by Chef Sean Carner and Dan Zappulla, offers a mix of comforting pub favorites with a modern twist, along with an extensive selection of wine, beer, and cocktails.
The Black Horse is now owned by 40North Restaurants.
Before reopening, the team at The Black Horse announced they are looking to add new members to their staff. For more information, click here.
