Police: Stay Away from Power Lines

Even with power off, downed lines are a hazard.

Mendham Township Police Department has issued a warning to residents to stay clear of downed power lines, despite the lack of electricity in the region.

"Due to the widespread damage from fallen trees, downed telephone poles and wires, there is very limited electricity if any at all," wrote police Lt. Vito Abrusci in a morning e-mail.

"With the constant efforts to restore power, electricity will at some point begin to flow through wires previously believed to be dead," he wrote.

Downed lines, while dead at the moment, will become dangerous again within moments and without much warning, rescue workers say.

"We warn everyone to consider every wire to be charged with electricity and not to move or drive over wires," Lt. Abrusci said.

He also pleaded for patience and calm as the community grapples with Hurricane Sandy's aftermath.

"The Mendham Township Police Department understands the difficult situation that most people are confronted with," he wrote. "Please be patient."
