'Survivor Tree' Sapling Will Be Planted In Chester Twp

The Survivor Tree survived the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. Now, a sapling will live in Chester.

CHESTER, NJ — A sapling from the "Survivor Tree" at the World Trade Center will be planted in a Chester Township park, Councilman Mike Iganamort said.

Chester was selected to receive the ten-foot sapling out of towns across the country, and the sapling will be planted at Chub Park's 9/11 memorial soon. The tree will be formally dedicated on Sept. 11, 2019, Iganamort said.

"It will be a lasting reminder of the sacrifice and heroism of that fateful day and a very meaningful addition to our parks," Iganamort said.

The Survivor Tree is a a Callery pear tree planted at the World Trade Center site. It was found by first responders in Oct. 2001 "severely damaged, with snapped roots and burned and broken branches," according to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. The tree was rehabilitated and returned to the site in 2010, where, two years later, it stood through Hurricane Sandy. It is still currently standing.
