Coast Guard Search For Person Missing In Atlantic Ocean Off Sandy Hook

The Coast Guard received a distress call at 12:04 p.m. Sunday about a sinking boat five miles south of Breezy Point. One person is missing.

The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for one person missing in the Atlantic Ocean off Sandy Hook Sunday night, the Coast Guard said in this press release.

At 12:04 p.m. Sunday, the Coast Guard received a distress call about a boat taking on water about fives miles southeast of Breezy Point, Queens.

Three Coast Guard rescue boats responded, and five people were rescued from the sinking boat. However, there were a total of six people on board; one person remains missing as of 8 p.m. Sunday, said the Coast Guard. They did not say whether it was a man or a woman, or give their age.

A helicopter from the Coast Guard station in Atlantic City is currently searching the Atlantic Ocean, as is NYPD, FDNY and New Jersey State Police, said the Coast Guard.

Four of the five people pulled from the water were unresponsive. Two people were airlifted to Staten Island University Hospital and three were taken to the Coast Guard station at Sandy Hook Gateway National Park, where emergency medical services were waiting.

Coast Guard crews administered CPR to some of the unresponsive victims. Patch will update this story when we get more information.
